First in a series of, I think four pictures, that I did as part of a lark on the Relicnews forums.
They're all fanart of the Homeworld series of games by Relic Entertainment (HW: Cataclysm being from Barking Dog Studios).
The story behind them is this: I was trying to do full digital paintings of major Homeworld characters for avatars on the Relicnews forum. Well, one of them, the bad guy from Homeworld 2 -- Makaan -- was such a pain in the ass to figure out the look of. Not easy when animatics show him as a head immersed in liquid from the nose down, and wearing a pair of rather Borg-esque noseplugs. Well, one night I got SO SICK of the nitpickers telling me to change this or change that, that I pumped this one out.
The idea was he'd be just as annoyed as I was about my having to constantly redraw my face. Kind of like this:
Makaan: Do you MIND?!
Me: Just ten more minutes. I'd get your nose right.
Makaan: Well HURRY UP. I got a fleet to run here!
Aiptek 9 by 11 digital tablet, Photoshop 7.0. Probably half an hour to an hour. I wasn't keeping track of the time.
It started off a series of those crazy portraits. I have one of Karan S'jet, the Beast from Cataclysm, and the Taiidan Emperor from the first HW. I'll post these next.
And really, gamers...I don't care if HW is old news from 1999. It's still a worthwhile game to check out if you can. It's probably 5 bucks at most gaming stores now.
If you like sci-fi, realistic ships, and an interesting storyline, it's so the game for you.
Homeworld, Homeworld 2 are copyright Relic Entertainment and Vivendi Universal. Homeworld: Cataclysm is copyright Barking Dog Studios (I believe it's Rockstar Games now?)
