Desert World by DeepChrome Desert World by DeepChrome
This was an exercise in doing a desert alien planet using blue-toned sunlight. All digitally painted in Photoshop CS2 with a Wacom Intuos3 tablet. All in all, I'm fairly happy with how it turned out, and I'm satisfied that I was able to paint all this out and do only some slight Levels adjustment. No other filters.

Some of the fixes made to this prior to posting were suggested by Riess (aka ~MK01) and nyyti of the RelicNews forums' art community.

Anyways, I think it turned out fairly good for a reaction to pulling my copy of Dune out and re-reading it again. :) I wanted to do an Arrakis-like planet that most definitely *was not* Arrakis.

Thank you. Yeah, I've been quietly improving. There's stuff I haven't bothered to post to DA. I should post more.

It's the Siberian version of Arrakis: lotsa snow instead of sand.

Heh, I was trying to keep it looking like sand dunes, but I'm sure the colorings would throw some people off. Just means I need to work on showing snow and sand apart more...or that people are not used to blue-tinged sand.

I almost said it was a 'budget russian replica', but that would've been a little much...

And I'm used to blue sand. I have the Sci-Fi Channel's 'Dune' miniseries on DVD. They use a blue lighting cue a lot.

:lmao: Yeah, they do, especially in the night sequences. One of the moons was green.

But in the book they're both silver.

 Ohwell, artistic license...

Wow, that's a very nice clean, smooth image there. Usually I get my images cluttered up with details and stuff but I like this look, it's... "iconic" in a way. The only Critique I have is that it's not large enough. I want to appreciate it in a larger size. :)

Thank you! :) Coming from a space artist like yourself, that's a real compliment.

Agreed on the sizing. I think I set the fullsize at largest, but I'm not sure. If it's smaller than the actual image size, I'll set it to show it at actual. (I think I did, but maybe I didn't. I used a 3200x2400 canvas on that one... >_>;)

Looks really great :-)

Only thing is that it somehow reminds me more of a snowcovered lanscape than one with bluetone landscape.

But anyways, it's still good, keep up the good work :-)

btw. RelicNews forum? You wouldn't happen to be a homeworld fan aswell? :-)

Yes, Homeworld fan. Definitely.

I even have a Homeworld fanfic on that forum, buried in the ashes of time because I haven't updated it in oh...2 months? :paranoid:

:lmao: Thanks.

Actually I stole (sort of) the idea off pictures of Arrakis with all the sand dunes. Just decided to make it "not" Arrakis so it wasn't a ripoff. :D
