Halloween Nebula II by DeepChrome Halloween Nebula II by DeepChrome
Those of you who remember my Halloween Nebula digipainting last year, will enjoy my repeat this year.

So every October, I'll do a Halloween Nebula in the colors of autumn. I'd like to think this one's an improvement over the original. I started with layers, filters, and junk, and then when I got a base form I liked, I painted over them to create something more "alive" as it were, altering what came before into something closer to what I wanted. The planets were done the same way--started with filter effects, then painted over them to build a texture and more believable surface.

So a bit of a lazy start, but the end refinements were all brushwork. The bigger stars were also brushes. Rest was a lot of dissolve and eraser. :XD:

I'm sure the purists will give me the evil eye for a few things, but I need to point out that of my gallery, spacescapes are few and far in between. Therefore, I'm no expert on the methods used to make one. ;)

At least I learned a few things, and tried a few new ideas. Growth is art, and art is growth. :D

Done on Photoshop 7.0

The 1200 by 800 size might suit some of you for wallpapers--feel free to use accordingly. If I hear enough interest about a wallpaper version of this, I'll make a letterbox of this to fit the 1200 by 960 size.

Thanks. :) Glad you liked it. Yeah I wanted to expand the colors past the single-tone Greg Martin had in the tutorial, and that one came out. Very interesting. I think I may hand-paint a few surface textures later, and maybe make a few textures along the way. :)

BTW, you wouldn't happen to know where I can find a tutorial on making Earthlike planets in PS 7.0? The one I found covers only rocklike planets, and for the life of me, I cannot yet figure how space artists are doing cloud patterns. :dead:

Thank you. :)

yea i found one that works great. ive also taught myself how to make oceans, havent really made a very oceanated planet with it though. for the oceans i use inner glow and mess with that and have a seperate layer for the water, usually flat color and i just hightlight it alil. ill find a living world tutorial when i get home

I was thinking the ocean was another flat layer that got highlighted and such, then flattened down when the rest of the surface was done.

I ran across some textures that MIGHT work for clouds, so I'll have to give that a try when my brain isn't feeling fried (like right now)...thanks for the tips. :)

Thats what i did before but when i made a completely seperate layer i found it was alittle easyer to control the water, at first i had the color on all the same layer.........buuuuuuuuut then i tried seperating all the main colors and i found that by seperating everything its easyer to control... but i forgot to name the layers so it was a pain lol im gonna go find the tutorial in a bit. i might have to send it to you via messanger so ill get in touch with you. Its the best tutorial ive seen as far as living worlds but i wanna look for another one too to find maybe different angles

Great planets and nebula, but I'd like to direct you to Greg Martin's starfield tutorial: [link]

There, you can find an easy way to make a realistic starfield. It does make stock starfields, but at the end he gives you tips for making the piece unique, which is the key. Space art is awesome and you have a great start here -- continue!

Hey, thanks. :D Yeah, I need to improve the starfields. (I'm sure I have other things to improve...for one thing I can't seem to make an Earthlike planet for shit by brushes and such alone...*sigh*)

Glad you liked it.

Ooh, festive.

The colors in this art complement the title very nicely. I don't particularly see the correlation between nebulae and holloween, but it's an exceptionally nice work of art.

The gaseous effect on the left seems almost too much like a space filler, it's understandable in the context of a nebula, but it's also something that i think would be good for you to be careful about.

Hmm, ok. I was thinking there seemed to be a bit too much nebula there. :XD: So yes, you've got a good point.

Eh, my prequel to this was a screaming orange painted nebula with a dinky little planet in the corner...hence the Halloween thing, the oranges of autumn. That's where that came from.

Glad you liked it.

Yeah, trying to improve some parts. I'm MUCH happier with my planets and nebulae versus what I could put out a year ago, so that's a start.

Now....onward to next ventures. :D
