Princess Irulan by DeepChrome Princess Irulan by DeepChrome
Second in my Dune portraiture series.

This is Princess Irulan. My color choices for her basically reflect what Jessica says in the book: "They say she has pretensions of a literary nature." Given she also supplies all the little narrative bits in the beginning of each chapter in the book, I thought the "literary" bit fit well.

So I figured I'd depict her as high-couture with a hint of Renaissance flair with the pushed-up chest and high collar. Her hair has a bit of homage to Queen Amidala. Purple always was a royal color, and I wanted her in cool tones to reflect the colder "literary" nature, and to contrast the warm-toned Jessica in the previous portrait.

The jewelry, lipstick, and nail polish are all something I've wanted to put into artwork for a long time: materials coated in "prism paint", a paint that changes color depending on the angle you look at it from. I have a few bottles of nail polish that are like this. From one angle, a color can be green, and from another it can be copper. So I thought I'd have some fun with some futuristic-looking style, and went with the prismatic coloring.

Done in Photoshop CS2 in another 3-day period of about 2-3 hours each with a Wacom Intuos3 6x8 tablet.

Dune and its characters are copyright the Herbert Estate.

Thanks. Glad you liked this.

I did this about a year and a half ago, so I may be interested in giving Irulan some more attention down the road. Can't promise anything, but I still love Dune and sci-fi in general, so you should be in luck.

I'm surprised no one else has dropped any comments yet. This is a good continuation of the previous piece you've done.

Some of the edging looks a little rough, though I would suppose that goes with the style of the art here. Otherwise I can't complain, its a good finish. :)

Thank you. I refined the edging more in the first piece. I was just tired of the second one by that point (wayyy too much smudge work on that dress...) and thought it was done. It probably could do to have sharper edging. Ah, well. Next time. :D
